Principal's Welcome Letter

Dear Applicant,

I am delighted that you have an interest in considering Saint Francis Xavier College as a possible future place of employment. Although I am a little biased, I would like to take just a few minutes of your time to set out why joining us at “SFX” could be a great career move to a sector which is positioned to offer a unique teaching experience, both in breadth and range.

From a personal point of view, having taught in a range of secondary schools and in a large General Further Education College, I can attest that the teaching experience and opportunities which you will encounter at Saint Francis Xavier Sixth Form College will be a pivotal point in your career, and likely to be the happiest teaching position you will ever experience. Although there are only 87 Sixth Form Colleges across the UK, they collectively educate 158, 567 young people aged 16-19.  This represents 12% of the UK population of that age. The same colleges provide 16% of the undergraduate population, punching above their weight in national academic contribution and achievement.

This gives you some idea of the level of specialisation required for our work. We live and breathe the joint enterprise of finding the best ways to motivate, sustain and educate young adults, many of whom will become movers and shakers of the future. It is important work, but always stimulating and fun. Nothing stands still, including the needs and stages of development of our students, and every day we are challenged to consider a different perspective or new challenge. This year one of our strategic objectives is just that: “Change the lens”. Complacency is left at the gate and there is a strong common purpose and set of shared values which run through the heart of all we do.

But what can the College offer to you? Because we know that our staff members are passionate about education, learning and self-development, as a new teacher you will have the opportunity to conduct your own research project on an area of professional knowledge or practice which you wish to enhance or investigate. This is made possible because we work in partnership with five other London Sixth Form Colleges which together has a joint professional development platform, offering programmes for all members of staff, at all levels of the organisation. We are magpies, open to new ideas and different ways of working from all quarters and you will have the opportunity to take forward initiatives and drive cross-College development as part of a team.

But along with training we know what it takes to help our new staff adjust to a new setting. All new members of staff have a mentor, or “buddy” who will be a resource for all those “silly” questions which you don’t want to ask your line manager. All staff can take advantage of the many staff perks available: subsidised massages; a bike purchase scheme; free parking in Inner London; pre-school nursery on site; a fitness suite; a programme of fitness classes; a confidential counselling service; a programme of mindfulness sessions.

Beyond this, I can absolutely guarantee that you will be bowled over by the warmth and kindness of the staff team: there is very little that they will not do to welcome new team members and to make you feel at home and relaxed. We work to live and if we are to thrive positive connections with others are crucial, for staff members and for students.

So please continue to explore the College and make your application. You won’t regret it.

Staff Development & Induction Programme for NQTs

The Principal Stella Flannery puts staff development to the fore of her strategic planning, so that teaching and learning is developed both in-house and through external agencies. Participation and collaboration are core values and expected behaviours of staff at SFX; every employee is a source of new ideas, useful insights and feedback; we are a highly skilled community and keen to learn from each other as well as look outwards.

The college is supported by strong professional relationships within the London Catholic Sixth Form Colleges (LoCVIC) partnership and the London Sixth Form Colleges (LSFC) partnership; which support formal and informal staff development and offer opportunities for teachers, support staff, managers and leaders across the partnerships to meet and develop, such as attending conferences, learning hubs and observe colleagues at the other colleges. There are dedicated, planned developmental opportunities for newly qualified teachers via LSFC and within SFX.  A starting point is arranging for early career teachers to observe colleagues within their teams and across the college. A full year long induction programme is followed by NQTs and includes topics such as safe guarding, equality & diversity, behaviour for learning, assessment for learning strategies, use of data to drive progress, and skills exchanges.

SFX Induction programme for NQTs is designed with advice from Wandsworth Education which acts as the Appropriate Body for the Induction of Newly Qualified Teachers.  Those early careers teachers who need to, are supported and mentored to attain QTLS.  Secondary School work experience is usually arranged for two weeks in the summer term of the NQT’s first year, by Head of CPD, Bernadette Griffin.

The college has created progression opportunities; much of this is designed to develop young talent to achieve their potential over time. According to the recent Investors in People report, there is a high level of satisfaction with line managers and management overall demonstrating the college values; staff referred to ‘transparency; support; respect and collaborative working’. Staff at SFX appreciate the focus on teamwork, staff development, respect for diversity and trust...There is culture of coaching; leading by example and mutual support.

All new staff are assigned an informal mentor in order to help them integrate into the college. The sharing of materials and ideas is standard amongst teaching staff; resources are easily accessible through shared areas on the VLE.  Teachers are encouraged to research innovative teaching, learning and assessment strategies to engage learners and continue to improve outcomes for all students.  To this end, supported experiments and exchange of sound teaching and assessment strategies are encouraged, with the needs of the learner at centre of all we do. The launch of the SFX blog in September 2019 will further promote the expertise and innovation of the college. A key to the success of SFX are its staff and the positive relationships we have with our learners.
